Internet Research Lab Wiki

The Internet Research Lab explores research that improves the Internet and how we use it. Our research includes:

  • extending the reach of the Internet,
  • improving the infrastructure of the Internet, and
  • enhancing the services the Internet offers.

Wireless Mesh Network

We are deploying a wireless mesh network in the Talmage building for use by our research lab. The network consists of used PCs with 802.11a/b/g WiFi interfaces, located in offices and labs throughout the Talmage building. We use the wireless interfaces to create a completely wireless network, similar to wireless networks used around the world to provide inexpensive network access. Each PC also has a wired Ethernet interface, connecting to the campus network, which allows us to manage the PCs and control experiments without affecting the experiment environment.

Peer-to-peer protocols are used heavily on the Internet today, but studying their performance is difficult because users are distributed widely on the Internet. To test peer-to-peer systems we use a research testbed called PlanetLab, which consists of 100s of computers run by many organizations all around the world. With PlanetLab, you get a single sign-on to your own virtual machine on any of the PlanetLab systems. This enables us to run and measure peer-to-peer software on many Internet systems simultaneously.
